What Are Farm Sinks?

Farm sinks are similar to the sinks that you find in most homes, but they are a much larger unit that extend to the front, or past the front of the counter that they sit in.  They are much larger in stature than a traditional ceramic sink, but are also more impressive.  People love these so much because of this impressive look that they have.

Common materials for a farm sink are ceramic, stainless steel, and even concrete.  Concrete seems to make them look even bigger than they actually are, which is great if that’s the look that you’re trying to achieve!  They have very square angles to the edges and inside the bowl.  Aside from the aesthetic differences, they function exactly the same as a traditional sinks.  They drain the same, have similar maintenance and cleaning, and look great with bar faucets!

The main difference between farm sinks and regular ones is their installation.  A traditional sink will mount into the counter top with some support from the bottom.  A farm sink sits on top of a part of the cabinet and is sealed around the edges to prevent water from leaking in between the sink and the counter.  Because these sinks are so large and heavy, special bracing has to be put into the cabinet that it is going to reside in to make sure that it can handle the extreme weight.  It can be very difficult to retro fit an existing cabinet or vanity to make a farm sink work.  Most installations will require a new supporting cabinet as well.

Farm sinks are a very impressive addition to any room of the home.  They take a lot of work and custom cabinetry to install, but are worth every bit.  If you’re planning a kitchen or bathroom remodel, be sure to consider farm sinks for your new room.
