Using the Gooseneck Lamp to Accentuate
While most people tend to think of gooseneck lamps as being extremely functional when it comes to lighting a desk or workspace, they can also be used to great advantage in your living areas, where they can be positioned to highlight objects and wall hangings. Their ability to twist any direction makes them perfect for highlighting difficult to reach areas.
Gooseneck floor lamps are often decorative in themselves, and can be a great and very useful addition to any living area. They are also helpful if you want to position it and have the neck turn up so that the object the light is directed on is highlighted. For example, if you have a painting, photo or wall hanging that you would particularly like to accentuate, simply position a floor lamp and turn the neck of the lamp up so that the light shines directly onto the object. Smaller decorative gooseneck lamps can also be used in a similar fashion. Place them on shelving next to or slightly behind whatever it is that you would like to showcase and the soft glow from the lamp will be sure to bring out the subtleties and nuances of the vase, display or antique.
One thing to be careful of, when using gooseneck lamps in this fashion, is that the lightbulb is not too strong and that you do not place the head of the lamp too close to whatever it is you are highlighting. You need to leave some space around the item, otherwise the lamp may overheat and damage what you are trying to showcase. Another important factor to consider is whether the object you want to highlight is sensitive to heat. Some enamels, stones and antiques can be damaged if they come in too close contact with heat.
Decorating gooseneck floor lamps can be used in a similar fashion. You can even place them directly behind an object, providing they stand tall enough to clear it well, and have the lamp shine over onto the object. This is really useful if you have something set in a corner, such as a houseplant or even a cabinet with items on display.
While they may often be thought of as humble and relegated to the study or bedroom, the flexible gooseneck lamp can actually be put to good use in decorating any room.
