Solar Shades and Your Solar Patio Cover

There are different ways in which we could discuss shading for your patio space.  If you are looking strictly for some shade under which you will sit or relax (possibly on a patio couch with some classy looking black patio cushions), then you have some options.  If you want to benefit from the fact that your patio roof may be usable space, then consider a solar patio cover.  This term could apply to a few different ideas.  The one we are discussing here is using that roof space to place some solar panels.  You can actually generate some power that you can use for your patio space or send back into the grid that can offset your utility costs.  More and more solar installations are becoming more efficient and cost effective.

Efficiency of solar power has always been a road block to it becoming more of a viable solution.  If you only get 30% conversion of the sun’s rays into usable electrical power, then there is a lot of room for improvement.  This is getting better and it will be one area that allows for more of a mainstream adoption of this technology.  Another issue is with cost.  With government rebate and tax incentive programs, this factor has been addressed.  To some, the cost has come down to a reasonable limit to take the plunge.

Now, if you are considering just shade for your patio room or indoor space, then you will want to think about solar shades instead.  These are more like indoor blinds for your home that allow for some blockage of the intense rays entering your home.  They are better for privacy, but do offer some insulating properties as well.  For better sun protection from entering your home and getter a cooler room, you better consider solar screens.  The screens are quoted to block up to 70-80% of the ultraviolet rays entering your home.  These might be used on your patio windows or other areas where you want to keep the heat down, but the light in.
