Real Pine Bedroom Furniture

When you are young and have just started working, it is difficult to afford good quality bedroom furniture. About all most young people in your position can do is buy cheap fiberboard furniture that does not last very long. But after a while, many find themselves dissatisfied with this kind of cheap solution. By this time, most have worked a few years and can afford something better. More importantly, their old fiberboard furniture has probably become a bit rickety and is probably showing serious signs of wear and tear. The urge to get something better can be met by buying real pine wood furniture.

Real pine wood furniture that is made from solid pine boards can last many decades of use. While technically a softwood, it is still wood and hence quite hard. If someone hits your head with a pine board, it (the board) will not break but your head may.

One problem is that real pine furniture made from solid boards is expensive while fiberboard is cheap. This leads some unscrupulous furniture makers to stick a veneer of pine on top of their cheap furniture and try to sell it as the real deal. When they manage this, they obviously make a lot of money. And of course, the people they tricked never know and will just complain that their “pine” furniture broke very quickly and that pine is weak.

Softwoods like pine grow fast. Coupled with strong commercial demand, some companies have been cultivating pine trees in plantations. When wood from these pine plantations is used to make furniture, the resulting pine furniture can be said to be eco-friendly.

Pine wood is beautiful, with natural grain markings and knots. Pine wood is light in color, and hence is easily enhanced by applying a stain to highlight its grains and knots. With a finish of wax or varnish, this reveals the natural beauty of the pine wood used to make furniture.

However, not all pine furniture is finished. Some are left polished smooth but unfinished in order to release their natural fragrance. There are some customers more than prepared to pay extra for this kind of unfinished bedroom furniture. But because pine is a softwood, and hence vulnerable to insects and fungus, this kind of furniture is not for everyone. If you leave some place with a cool and dry climate, or if you keep your bedroom constantly air-conditioned 24×7, there is generally no problem.

These are all good reasons why people prefer to buy pine bedroom furniture rather than fiberboard furniture despite the higher cost. But some of you may wonder – is there a better grade of furniture than pine? Yes, there is … arguably. Quality oak bedroom furniture sells for a much higher price tag than pine bedroom furniture. One reason for the higher price is oak’s relative scarcity, another is because oak wood is much harder and stronger than pine, and the third reason is that oak furniture is so much more difficult to make.

For someone who has just started working, cheap fiberboard furniture is all they can afford to buy. But if you have worked for a few years and successfully started to establish your career, it may be a good idea for you to invest in a set of pine bedroom furniture. For one thing, it always feels better when you can sleep in a better quality bed. For another, pine lasts so much longer than fiberboard and you will save money in the long run.
