There are several different types of leather used to upholster furniture.
Some of these types of leather are more durable and softer than others which can be easily worn down and is often very stiff. Doing the right type of research before hitting the furniture store will help make this chore much more enjoyable and more ground will be covered in a shorter amount of time if you know what you are looking for. Some of these different types of leather include, top grain, split grain, aniline finish, and semi aniline finish.
Top grain leather is just what its name implies, it is made from the outer layer of the animals hide, or its skin. Top grain leather is the highest quality form of leather and is the most supple and durable material used to upholster furniture. If you can find furniture made of this quality material that fits within your budget cost wise then buy it, it is well worth the extra expense.
Split leather is the underside of the skin of the hide of the animal. This type of leather is often stiff and not a durable as top grain leather. Split leather is often more heavily died which is the reason it is so stiff but at the same time it is often an unusual color and looks great on furniture.
Another form of leather includes nubuck, which is a form of top grain leather in which the surfaces has been sanded or buffed out creating a velvet or nap type of feeling in the material. This type of leather is quite often very expensive but is one of the most durable type of material used for upholstering furniture.
