Effective Window Valances
Effective window valances seems a bit like a contradiction in terms. After all window valances don’t actually do anything. They just hang there looking pretty and if you did not have them you would not notice anything amiss in terms of how you use your room or how it functions. But window valances are actually effective at doing several things when it comes to how your room looks.
1. They Hide Ugly Curtain Rods
If you have, horror of horrors, white plastic curtain rails, window valances will cover them up nicely so your interior designer friend will not come over all faint when she visits. To hang valances and curtains together you need both a drapery rod and a curtain rod. With some valances, which are merely looped over the drapery rod, it will be on show but with most styles both are hidden.
2. They Accentuate Your Windows
Valances frame the tops of your windows and draw attention to them along with the curtains. If you have beautiful windows or a magnificent view you will find that visitors will notice them as soon as they enter the room. If your windows and view are nothing special, window valances can be attractive in themselves and make an ugly view less important.
3. They Help Form the Style of the Room
If window valances are formal in style such as you find with ascot valances or swags and tails type valances they will help define the overall look of your room as formal. If they are softer and merely draped over the valance rod, they will help define the room as informal. To be effective the style of window valance has to match the style of the rest of the room. A floaty valance and traditional serious furniture do not go well together. Similarly a formally tailored geometric valance does not do a romantic bedroom justice.
