Common Outdoor Uses for Solar Lights

Solar used to be the preserve of a minority of ‘green’ activists, but as prices have started to come down and general interest in environmental issues has risen, they have started to win over many more consumers. As solar technology has improved, the applications for the use of that technology around the home, has increased as well. Solar lights are not quite as versatile as standard electric lighting just yet, but they have come on in leaps and bounds in recent years, and are now not too far behind standard lights.

One of the most practical applications for this type of lighting is when it is used in conjunction with a motion detector to provide security lighting around the boundary of your home. Solar security lights are often used as part of a solar driveway lights system, and can provide a remarkably intense beam of light which is convenient when you need to walk outside at night, and it will also do a great job of deterring unwanted visitors on to your property.

Continuing the outdoor theme, one of the easiest installations to consider is solar powered landscape lighting. In some ways they are perfect for this application, the type of light they emit is ideal for lighting statues, trees or fountains, and because the fixing itself is outdoors, the unit will usually be totally self-contained.

Lighting borders and pathways is another application where solar lights are particularly well suited. The lights can be used to define the border of a lawn, driveway or walkway, and are also effective at providing mood lighting around the edge of a yard or garden. If incorporated properly in a garden lighting scheme, they can add an understated elegance to any outdoor space.

There are of course many hundreds of different uses for solar powered lights, both indoors and outdoors. The best solar lights systems have reduced significantly in price in recent years, and are now very cost effective to install and run. If we are to avert a world energy catastrophe, we will all having to consider solar lighting at some stage.
